Thousands of undocumented immigrants will be able to acquire Irish citizenship through naturalization under a new program. The country’s minister called it a once-in-a-generation opportunity. The Irish Department of Justice announced its rollout on January 31, 2022. The ministry estimates that about 17,000 undocumented immigrants and their families will be able to benefit from passport eligibility within a six-month period.

In a statement, Justice Minister Helen McEntee said the program is designed to help undocumented people – they will get more professional and social opportunities. She said she was pleased to open the program to allow undocumented long-term immigrants and their family members living in Ireland to gain citizenship. McEntee says it will allow undocumented immigrants and their families who qualify under the scheme to become full members of Irish society rather than living on its margins.

All undocumented people who have lived in the country for more than four years will be able to take part in the program. The period is reduced to 3 years for aliens with children. Spouses and children under the age of 23 can be included in the main candidate’s application. Immigrants will first be granted a special Stamp 4 permit that entitles them to legal employment. After several years of holding this document, aliens will be granted Irish citizenship. You can apply for the program until July 31, 2022.
